Chantal Kreviazuk- All About A Kiss

Title: Jinx

Author: Meg Cabot

Rating: 5/5

Book 5 of 100: (The 100+ Reading Challenge)

Where Jinx goes, trouble follows. Which is why her parents have shipped her off to New York to stay with relatives - until the trouble she’s caused back home dies down. But her presence seems to spell instant disaster for her perfect cousin, Tory. And what was she thinking, getting involved with hot guy Zack? Jinx is starting to wonder if she’s more than unlucky… could she be cursed?

Meg Cabot has done it again. Awoken my spirits, I mean.

I’m giving Jinx a five - just like every other Meg Cabot book I’ve read in my life. This is what a young adult novel should be about. Quirky yet inquisitive - this is totally chick-lit. And, boy, do I love it.

Jean, or Jinx as she is more commonly addressed as, is not your average sixteen-year-old. She is the descendant of a witch called Branwen - the latter has passed down her powers onto her. Bad luck seems to shadow her everywhere but that’s only because she’s afraid to use her gift. Did she cast a love spell on Zack or was she just lucky enough to win his heart over? That is for you to find out.

Similar to any other chick-lit novel, this book has got the dark side - her cousin, Tory, I mean. Thinking that she is the one with the powers, she goes crazy at realizing it was Jinx after all who is the real descendant. And that’s when it starts to get rough. How will Tory steal the witch-y magic from Jinx? By drinking her blood, of course.

This novel got me on the edge of my seat. Have I mentioned that I’m totally into it? And Zack - dear Zack - is just gorgeous. Actually, Zack is my kind of guy. He’s cute - but he doesn’t know it. You get the picture? But, yeah - I say this over and over again everytime I come across any of Meg Cabot’s fictional guys. I do think of Jesse (from The Mediator series) and Michael (The Princess Diaries) from time to time :]

This book is filled with magic - in the sense that it reminds the reader of how important it is to appreciate what you have and not to fear it. Magic can be a grand thing but, if not put into good use, may hurt another. It could get messy.

And what about love spells? Do they work? Well, in the words of our preacher’s daughter Jinx,

…the best, most long-lasting love has a magic all its own, and doesn’t need any help from witchcraft.

Two thumbs up to Jinx. I definitely recommend it to anyone. ^_^
